The Sika Deer (Cervus Nippon)

Sika deer (Cervus Nippon) have an interesting history in the United Kingdom, their presence is tied to the introduction then escape from deer parks. Sika deer are not native to the UK but were introduced from the Far East in the mid-19th century. Akin to fallow deer, sika were initially kept by aristocracy in enclosed deer parks as part of ornamental landscapes, and for hunting. They were prized for their distinctive appearance, and the challenge they presented to hunters.

Sika deer are known to interbreed with native red deer in certain areas, leading to hybrid populations. This has raised concerns among conservationists about the potential impacts on the genetics of native deer species. Sika deer can also have an impact on vegetation and ecosystems through browsing and grazing, exhibiting a fondness for grasses, shrubs, tree shoots, and heather. They may compete with native deer species for resources, and their presence in certain habitats can influence plant communities.

Sika deer are subject to wildlife conservation laws in the UK, and efforts are made to manage their populations. In some areas, culling programs are implemented to control population numbers and minimize potential ecological impacts. Their populations continue to be monitored, and management strategies are employed to balance their presence with the conservation of native ecosystems.

A medium-large game species, fully grown adult males are typically between 95-125cm tall at their shoulders and weigh between 45-80kg. Females are referred to as ‘hinds’, with the male of the species called a ‘stag’. The UK’s annual sika deer ‘rut’ is from late September through to November, the environment having a strong influence on how they mate. During the rut, dominant stags will typically defend a territory, however, they can also hold a harem of hinds like red deer. Post mating season, sika deer will return to smaller same-sex groups. Sika deer are arguably one of the most exciting and intelligent deer species to hunt anywhere in the world. They have an amazing vocal range and have the ability when squealing and screaming to send a chill through the most experienced hunter.
